A lovely September day greeted us at Whetstone, where lush green grass had returned after the summer drought. The areas around the greens and the first and second cuts of rough were overdue a trim, and some greens fell short of the standard we have come to expect. The enjoyable layout still provided a good challenge, but players seemed to struggle with the changed conditions, with only one golfer breaking par. Third place went to Red Team captain Gez with 34 points, whose blob-free round featured seven pars and a birdie. It was a solid effort, but a quiet spell midway through the back nine cost him valuable points and left him unable to close the gap on the leaders. Pete Weston took second place with 36 points. A slow start, yielding just one point from the opening two holes, probably cost him victory. He recovered strongly, though, with an impressive 21 points on the back nine, including four pars and just one blob. The honours went to Bez with 38 points, a welcome return to form just in time for the tour. An eagle on the second hole earned him five points, only to be followed immediately by his sole blob of the day. A steady back nine of two- and three-point scores proved decisive and sealed a deserved victory. Behind the leading trio, Jason Carroll, Peter Shaw, and Kirk Taylor all returned 32 points. With all six heading to Spain for the tour, there were encouraging signs across the group and plenty to build on ahead of the tougher Spanish courses.
