After
a couple of years away from the tour scene Anthony H returned with a
well deserved win. After taking the first day victory with 39 points he
topped it up with a 6 over par 30 on the second day, leaving him 11
shots clear of his next rival Gez. After some friendly banter from his
closest rivals about not letting the lead slip Anthony nearly did the
unthinkable and let it get to him. With his second ever lowest score of
his WGGC history 24 points, he must have been hoping his closet rivals
did not break par. Luckily for him but not for Gez he fell just short
posting a 3 over par 33. So Anthony takes the tour trophy finishing off
with 93 points only two points ahead of Gez on 91. back in 3rd place was
a very consistent Paul Newsome some 5 shots back (but did claim 3
nearest the pins and 1 captains combo) 4th spot went to another Blue
Sean Anderson and slotting in at 5th position was Blakey.
Wyder Cup Story
It was another mouth watering
finally. With all the furriery at the end talking about how Anthony
nearly blew an 11 shot lead over Gez for tour champion, the Blue team
quietly snatched victory with an impressive end to the round, taking
something from the last 8 matches. Andy Leitch cleared the one match
deficit after day 2 by taking the first game 3&2, then it was a clean
sweep for the Newsome's taking all 4 four games in the next match 4&3
and 3&2. Match 3 saw a surprising blue victory 3½ to ½ leaving the reds
with a slender 1 point lead with the last 4 ball to come. Previous days
winner Blakey was up against tour leader after two days Anthony with
Whitt and Sean A also in contention. It was nip and tuck till the par 3
17th where Sean and Anthony both beat Whitt for a 2&1 victory and back
to back Wyder Cup wins for the Blues. Blue team captain Paul splashed
out on the champagne for the team for there unexpected win. The reds
still have the overall lead but I am sure Hawkstone Park next April will
be another epic encounter in the Wyder Cup series.
