Widney Manor

Well what a superb sunny day in December which saw our final event of the 2008 season end in style. 18 golfers playing better than their handicaps and 11 of them breaking the 40 point barrier. For the forth time this season an associate member ended up getting the top score with Adi Galt notching a massive 47 points. He has paid the price for this excellent display with his handicap being adjusted to reflect this but I can see it getting another cut at the AGM before next season. Top spot was again decided on count back when Graham S and Nico's both notching very good score of 44 points, but a better back nine saw Graham take it by one shot. Back in third saw Darren G who's 43 points came from an excellent back nine of 26 points, no blobs and a big 5 pointer on the 13th. (Birdie on a hole with 2 shots) One point back on 42 came Steve W, Craig W and Captain Pete all have all paid the price for a last event good round by staring the next season at least two shots lower. (They will have to get some practice in over the winter to maintain there good positional finishes in their respective leagues)

Nearest the pin in one winners where Rick B and Woody who both ended up within a couple of feet to secure the prizes. For the third event running Cam secured nearest the pin in two after his second shot finished 6 feet away from the pin. Captain's combo ended up a close affair with 4 golfers all ending up on 10 points made up of a couple of three points and a four point score. Adi Galt managed to take it on count back from Pete S, Darren G and guest Andy Leitch.

This event also saw the OOM titles decided. The Albatross League saw the chance of 4 golfers who could realistically take the title before the off, with Mark P in the driving seat. Unfortunately Mark could only notch 33 points that left it wide open for Craig W. His score of 42 meant a winning margin of 6 points from Mark P and Captain Pete who shot himself up to joint second after an impressive 42 points. The Eagle League saw a what we all thought was an odds on winner with Anthony H taking a 7 point lead and a 32 point backup into this event. Closest rivals Wiggy and Dale both ended up playing to their handicaps with 35 and 36 points respectfully, which left them a couple short if Anthony. Anthony picked today to have a round he would like to forget, his front nine of 13 points was not a good start and even though he picked up on the back nine he only notched 31 points. Which still left him 2 clear of his closest rivals. But Steve W nearly came from no where to snatch it, being 10 points behind at the start of the day his score of 42 equaled things up at 257 points each. So it was down to their 8th best score of the season which gave the title to Anthony as his 31 scored today piped Steve's 30 scored at Staverton in October. His overall average over the year was 0.22 better than Steve so I am sure Steve will be cursing his 5 on the par three 15th today. The Birdie league was far more clear cut with Sean A retaining his title by a clear 11 point margin. Graham winning score of 44 points saw him finish in second position with the vastly improving Chris Shaw in third. Bez made a welcome return after a broken ankle and ended up with a respectable 35 points.
