Hellidon Lakes April 21st & 22nd

An idyllic setting made for a relaxing start to the season.

New member Andy G discusses tactics with division 2 member Jim C. Jim looking for a solid season this year after buying some new clubs and getting the experience of some regular golf last year. Andy back on the scene after 10 years off needs to just get out on the golf course in order to make an impression in division 3 this year.

Our first event of the year turned out to be another resounding success. 28 golfers turned out for the first day made up of one guest and 5 new members. Out of the new members Dave B top scored with 33, this after a slow start with only 2 points after 3 holes. Mark P and Chris Shaw turned in a respectable 27 & 26 respectfully. Andy G weighed in with 19 points which gives him the grounding for improvement after 10 years off the scene. The conditions where excellent and gave no grounds for any excuses, until you got out there. The fairways where playing fast and the bounce untrue while the greens where like lightning. All this lead to one of the lowest stableford scores we have had as a winner, but its was that man Bez again who came out tops with a solid 37 points, 5 nett birdies and 8 nett pars was just unbeatable. Hot on his tail was only 1 point behind was Paul H, Steve W and Dave T. Dave 4 points on the last three holes stopped him from beating Bez, while Steve w suffered the same fate. Mister consistent Paul H just came up short despite getting no blobs. The next 10 places where covered by only 5 points. Nearest the pin on the picturesque 18th was won by Paul B with a nice tee shot falling around 10 feet away from the pin. Nearest the pin in 2 was won by mister consistent Paul Heathcote using the fast fairways to get within 12 feet of the flag.

Saturday evening started off with a very nice 3 course meal that went down well with everyone. This was followed by the 2006 presentations full details of who won what can be found here. After the awards had been presented we ran the WGGC Putt Master competition. This proved to be a noisy affair with plenty of barracking from around the room. So at around 11:30 Saturday evening it came down to the final 2. A hotly contested affair between Nico and Anthony H went down to the last ball with Anthony coming put on top. it was off to the bar for some relaxation and banter ready for the onslaught of Sunday. The next morning breakfast was a somber affair with many bleary eyes and headaches but this did not stop some of the diehards from running up 9 practice holes on the green course, while others went for the more relaxed approach of swimming, bowling and sleeping. Then it came to the afternoon main event. Dave W was first off and proceeded to put it 6 feet from the pin on the xxx par 4 dropping in two shots later for a gross birdie nett eagle. No one else managed to match him but 5 people did get there par. Scores generally where higher with people playing far better with course knowledge though some found it tough from the turn due to far too much golf or alcohol. Paul Heathcote followed up his nearest the pin in 2 win on Saturday by winning the nearest the pin in 1 on the short 10th. A short pitching wedge and role in from the front put the ball in the middle of the green an easy position for another par nett birdie. Man of the weekend Bez then completed his dominance with grabbing the nearest the pin in 2 on the 3rd. After hitting a massive drive he touched a delicate sand wedge too within 5 feet of the flag knocking in for another par.
