Our first event of the season did not disappoint, marking a welcome return to a firm favourite in South Leicestershire. Conditions were kind for April, with spells of sunshine and a light breeze. A slight nip in the air kept things honest, but overall it set the stage perfectly for a positive start to the season. The golf followed suit, with two-thirds of the field posting 30 points or more. It proved to be a tightly contested affair, with 8th place finishing on level par and just a single shot separating 8th from 2nd.

Four golfers made an excellent start to the season, all finishing on level par, John Timson, Andy Whittaker, Dave Thompson and Craig Whatsize. Dave Thompson finished strongly, paring the final three holes, but a costly blob and a few too many single-point holes through the middle of the round kept him out of contention. John Timson set the early pace with an impressive 21 points on the front nine, but a late wobble, just 3 points over the final three holes, ultimately ended his chances. Craig Whatsize made a bright start with a par on the opening hole, but back-to-back blobs shortly after proved decisive in keeping him from the top spot. Andy Whittaker’s round was undone by three costly blobs, particularly on holes where he was receiving two shots, leaving him wondering what might have been.

At the sharp end, it was incredibly tight, with three players locked together battling for second place, with countback ultimately deciding the order. Steve Whiston had to settle for fourth, Kirk Taylor edged into third, while Martin Shaw’s superior back nine secured him second spot, continuing his strong form following victory at the last event at Ansty. Kirk Taylor’s only blemish came at the worst possible time, a blob on the 18th that likely cost him outright second and a real shot at the win. Steve Whiston set the early pace with an excellent 21-point front nine, but couldn’t replicate it coming home, with two costly eights (blobs) halting his charge.

But the winner, by a clear three-point margin on the day, was Martin Fooks. A remarkable 23-point turnaround from his previous outing proved decisive. A superbly consistent round saw no blobs on the card, highlighted by an excellent 22 points on the front nine. With only two single-point holes all day, it was a performance built on consistency, more than enough to secure a well-deserved victory.
