 Our
latest event again saw no golfer break par. We have now had 191
rounds of golf this year, with only 13 rounds breaking par. (That's
6.8%) The handicap committee can take a pat on the back. A muggy
slightly windy day saw greens that resembled an ice rink, with
everyone finding it very difficult to hold the balls on and around
the putting surface. This was a day for those who could hold/control
the roll. Inform Gez N seemed to control better than other taking
top spot with an even par round, just the one blob mixed with 7 pars
and a birdie was enough to take it by one. Next came a Whatsize
double with Greg just getting the better of Craig by a
single point. His round consisted of 6 pars and one blob
which was conceded on the 1st hole. A storming back nine of
21 points shot him up the leader board after a front nine of
14 (Another round of "if only") Craig took third spot and is
on a roll, not finishing outside the top three for the last
3 rounds (This after his June last place) He has been
rewarded with a move up to second place in the Division 1
OOM, and a place in the Autumn Knockout Cup final against
Gez N. Woody continues his goof form with a solid 34 for a
equal share of third spot.
Course Overview
18
hole parkland championship course with ancient woodland and
lakes built by the Dominican
Monks in 19th century. Many varieties of wildlife can be
found within the boundaries of the course, providing the
perfect backdrop to a stunning golf course which will tempt
you back, again and again. The course is built on sand stone
allowing the land to drain freely for all year round play.
The front nine starts strongly with the long Par 3 2nd
playing 183 yards down hill protected by mature trees and
foliage, club selection is key when the ball rises above the
trees, difficulties loom on either side. The Par 4, 8th hole
is 381 yards uphill from the tee, a magnificent three tier
green awaits accurate approaches with mounds on the left
side and bunkers on the right. Finishing the
front 9 is the Par 3 9th hole, it is a very deceptive hole
which can be easily overlooked at your peril. The hole is
very reminiscent of the ‘Post Stamp’ at Troon with bunkers
lurking on either side and swales picking up any other
erratic shots. The course shows its teeth on the back 9. The
sweeping fairway on the Par 4 10th hole runs alongside the
Dominican Priory, the green is perched up high requiring an
accurate 2nd shot between the established trees to a sloping
green. Spectacular views of Ashbourne compliment the
challenge proposed by the back 9 culminating with the
signature Hole, 18. Hole 18 measures 412 yards, a carry of
150 yards over three pools
built by the Dominican’s. A good drive will leave you
ideally positioned on a plateau overlooking the green
surrounded by bunkers and any other wayward shots will
gather in the large undulations short of the green. |
